Apellis is seeking to appoint VP of Global Market Access and Policy, a strong commercial leader with US and Ex-US experience to lead their Market Access approach globally. This is an outstanding position and opportunity for an experienced and seasoned professional to make significant impact for Apellis while serving as a member of Apellis’ extended global commercial leadership team. The Vice President of Global Market Access and Policy will need to demonstrate cross-functional engagement, strategic mindset, business acumen and strong leadership skills to shape policy and ensure global access in a profitable manner across the globe.  The new VP of Global Market Access and Policy will lead the build out of Apellis’ Market Access and Policy team, setting up the complete structure and setting the strategy and launch plans in partnership and constant collaboration with the Global Marketing and Commercial team. Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer and based at the global commercial headquarters in Waltham, MA, the VP of Global Market Access and Policy will serve as a key member of the global commercial leadership team. S/he will lead teams focused on Rare Hematological disease like PNH (Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria) and other indications like GA (Geographic Atrophy) and efforts focused on developing complement immunotherapies for pipeline diseases and new assets, as well as the Access evaluation of external assets and technologies. This professional and his/her organization is charged with setting the Global vision and strategy as well as executing key initiatives that will enable Apellis to optimize the global opportunity for the Company’s products and pipeline assets.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Understand key business drivers specifically related to value assessment an access for APL-2 and pipeline products to shape and build a broader team to support the US and key strategic ex-US markets including pricing, reimbursement, health economics and value assessment, policy, and field operations
  • Guide strategic planning to support value and access optimization for APL-2 in development as well as life-cycle planning indication expansion
  • Leads efforts to analyze, assess and translate opportunities and challenges in the global access and policy landscape into meaningful decision points, recommendations, strategies and tactics.
  • Achieve business objectives while weighing trade-offs with investment, time, and impact associated with execution within
  • Conceive and bring forward innovative access solutions that improve patient outcomes and demonstrate therapeutic value; lead these discussions and partnerships with key external stakeholders (physicians, payers, patients) to anticipate challenges and work toward solutions to successfully implement upon launch and post-launch
  • Provide US and global payer input into clinical development programs based on operational launch experience of fully understanding drivers and barriers of value optimization around the global
  • Support build out of function to drive value optimization within broad indication base; ensuring goals and development plans are in place and met; Effectively advocate for and manage budget
  • Develop the global value and access approach including pricing guardrails, value messaging, value propositions, and associated contracting strategies relevant for key markets to maximize patient access
  • In the US, understand environmental landscape associated with commercial, Medicare, Medicaid and how each segment impacts reimbursement and gross-to-net over the lifecycle of a product; make sound recommendations for clinical development and launch activities including pricing guidance using this lens
  • Develop and Build out customer (payer)-facing teams for interactions with payers
  • Develop and Build out Government Affairs and Policy group
  • Communicate and partner directly with internal cross-functional teams including medical, legal, finance, compliance, commercial, and corporate communications
  • Demonstrate ability to take initiative and consistently deliver high-quality deliverables
  • Confidence and executive presence to communicate effectively with the Chief Executive Officer, board members, and other identified stakeholders.
Education:
  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree; an MBA or advanced science/medical degree is greatly preferred 
Experience and Qualifications: 
  • 15+ years of direct biotechnology / pharmaceutical industry experience and payer experience
  • Track record of being a motivational leader to others within and across their organization to prioritize and deliver consistently on business objectives
  • Evidence of setting audacious goals to overdeliver and drive high standards for individual and team accomplishment
  • Outstanding intellectual ability with judgment that reflects reasoned and creative business views. 
  • A strong understanding of the US and Ex-US healthcare system, including the legal and regulatory environment, along with demonstrated integrity on the job.
