Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer and based at the global commercial headquarters in Waltham, MA, the VP, Global Marketing will serve as a key member of the global commercial leadership team. S/he will lead teams focused on Rare Hematological disease like PNH (Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria) and other indications like GA (Geographic Atrophy) and efforts focused on developing complement immunotherapies for pipeline diseases and new assets, as well as the commercial evaluation of external assets and technologies. This professional and his/her organization is charged with setting the global commercial vision and strategy as well as executing key initiatives that will enable Apellis to optimize the global opportunity for the Company’s products and pipeline assets.

Fundamentally, the VP, Global Marketing will bring an ability to operate at a strategic and senior level, applying his/her experience and knowledge of commercialization together with a holistic view of drug discovery and clinical development in order to bring maximum benefit for patients and to demonstrate the value of our products.

Job Responsibilities:

The VP of Global Marketing, in particular, will bring strategic leadership to shape the future of the Apellis business within and beyond PNH and GA. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Accountable for the global commercialization strategy (working with regional leads) across the entire portfolio and pipeline. This includes defining global disease area vision and strategies for all products as well as Pipeline assets in collaboration with Research, Clinical Development, and Regulatory
  • Key member of Global Commercial Leadership Team helping prepare for commercial launches, deliver commercial success, and develop commercial talent at Apellis
  • Coordinate processes and communications to ensure engagement and alignment across geographies and functions
  • Work with cross-functional team to define Target Product Profiles (TPP) for each asset and input to design of integrated evidence generation plans across Clinical/Medical/Global Market Access (GMAX) that meet the TPPs
  • Ensure development of comprehensive Life Cycle Management (LCM) plans for each product as well as a collective LCM plan across the portfolio that drives lifecycle opportunities and new data
  • Collaborate with Business Intelligence function to develop deep customer insights to shape our commercial and disease area strategy
  • Partner with Business Development and Research and Development on the identification and evaluation of external opportunities (assets or technologies) that could serve as a complement to the internal pipeline, and that can further the strategic position and capabilities of the organization
  • Partner with the GMAX team on the development of a compelling economic value proposition and global pricing recommendations
  • Maintain industry awareness regarding market trends, competition, product acceptance and new product releases
  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree; an MBA or advanced science/medical degree is greatly preferred 

Experience and Background:

  • Proven leadership in a combination of commercial operational roles globally, as well as strategic marketing across multiple specialty areas, and an exceptional track record in specialty product launches. Fundamentally, s/he must bring scientific credibility and influence, learning agility, a creative and innovative mindset and approach, a sense of urgency, and an ability to be “hands on”.
  • Significant breadth of commercial experience, with the ideal candidate having held both operational and strategic roles, as well as positions across multiple functions (e.g. sales, marketing, market access, etc.)
  • 12+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and/or consulting arena, including some combination of marketing & sales and P&L management, plus market research and/or new product planning
  • Demonstrated experience in the conception, development and execution of marketing strategies for highly specialized products in the U.S. and internationally/global, including a track record of successful product launches
  • Past participation and leadership of cross functional teams focused on registration and developing Life Cycle Management (LCM) recommendations
  • Outstanding intellectual ability with judgment that reflects reasoned and creative business views.
  • A strong understanding of the global healthcare system, including the legal and regulatory environment, along with demonstrated integrity on the job.
  • Must be able to analyze financial data as well as industry data related to sales, market share, price/volume, market research, etc. Must be able to maximize all market research data and communicate its results and application.
