Our Human Resource Team is growing.  We seeking an experienced Sr. Manager, Benefits to be responsible for our benefits program at Apellis.  Come help us grow.  

This person is responsible for the overall design, implementation, communication, and administration of the organization's benefits programs. This is a hands-on position, requiring strong operational and vendor management skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the VP, Total Rewards, to create a benefits strategy to support the company talent strategy in a meaningful way, in addition to developing a multi-year roadmap to realize the strategy.
  • Direct and plan the day-to-day operations of Apellis benefit programs (health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, FMLA, life insurance, flexible spending plan, retirement plan, other voluntary benefits and employee assistance programs)
  • Manage vendors associated with the specific area of responsibility to ensure optimal delivery and integration with other vendor solutions, etc.
  • Monitor and manage the effectiveness of existing employee benefits plans and programs, guidelines and procedures.
  • Maintain a current understanding of the constant changing internal/external landscape that impacts benefits in order to recommend new and/or improved employee benefit plans and increased ROI tactics.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal requirements of various benefit programs and the preparation of required annual reports
  • Ensure smooth operation of benefits programs in all phases (implementation, open enrollment, HRIS/payroll interfaces, investment fund option changes, employee appeals, etc.)
  • Advise and counsel management and employees on existing benefits.
  • Develop integrated communications plan to best showcase benefits offerings in a way that meets employees where they are.
  • Other duties as required.

Education, Registration & Certification:

BA/BS or related experience.


5-10 years in employee benefits with direct responsibility for health and welfare and defined contribution plans.  Previous biotech/pharma experienced desired.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of state and federal laws/regulations regarding employment and employee benefits;
  • A bias for analytical, quantitative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact at all levels of the organization and with external parties;
  • Strong vendor management skills;
  • Sense of humor;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, to include the ability to create and deliver written and verbal presentations;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Working knowledge of HRIS systems, specifically ADP WFN;
  • Must be able to conceptualize problems and solutions from the view of various stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated project management and process improvement skills from initial research/planning stage to implementation for on-time delivery;
  • Strong sense of urgency, attention to detail and accuracy.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
