Position Summary:

The Apellis MSL Field Director is a remote role focused on aligning and executing the strategic and tactical plan for engagement with the scientific community and overseeing the effective functioning of individual MSLs and the MSL team.  This role will primarily support the Apellis rare disease programs in hematology.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Coach, train and manage MSL performance with a goal of achieving strategic and tactical goals
  • Ensure that MSLs career interests/needs are routinely discussed/assessed to ensure talent retention
  • Think strategically and assist MSLs in development of Medical Engagement Plans and MSL tools aligned with medical strategy
  • Ensure that MSLs are trained thoroughly and that they maintain robust current scientific knowledge to facilitate scientific exchange
  • Support MSL relationships with thought leaders
  • Engage with MSLs in the field on a quarterly basis to assess the execution of plans within their territories and to provide opportunities for field coaching
  • Monitor and focus MSL activities based on competing priorities
  • Collaborate with Head of Field Medical to determine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and monitor team progress. Coach/correct to optimize progress.
  • Translate overall strategies into specific goals and expected outcomes for each MSL
  • Supervise the identification, mapping and review of KOLs for each MSLs to assist with prioritization of key thought leaders/accounts
  • Review and analyze clinical insights collected from MSL team and share with appropriate internal stakeholders
  • Support, attend and follow up on scientific congresses, symposia, or other appropriate events

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, or other medical related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  • At least 8 years of experience in Medical Affairs or Medical Science role
  • Robust and current clinical development experience supporting drugs to treat rare diseases; prior hematology and nephrology experience is a plus
  • At least 2 years management experience 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of relevant health care systems, the evolving landscape, regulatory and payer environment
  • Energetically embraces responsibilities, demonstrates ability to achieve goals
  • Has strong initiative, and functions well as part of a cross-functional team
  • Deep understanding of compliance considerations, local regulations and codes of practice within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Exhibits excellent time management and is able to work independently
  • Experience in a start-up environment preferred
  • Must be pro-active team player, flexible, and open to change

Other:

  • Office is home based
  • Travel within region up to 75%.
  • Required travel to medical meetings, team meetings, and other group meetings (will require some weekends)
