Position Summary:

We are seeking a talented, motivated, and goal-oriented individual to join our Program Management team. As a Director of Program Management at Apellis, the successful candidate play an important role in supporting efforts to develop new products and maximize the value of the pipeline.  The individual in this role will serve as Program Manager for one or more development and late stage research programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background and experience developing drugs in orphan disease and leverage that experience to play a key leadership role on cross-functional drug development program teams, helping to translate scientific ideas into new medicines for patients.  This role is highly cross-functional and will report to the Vice President, Program Management.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Program Manager for one or more complex, global cross-functional drug development program teams that include representatives from clinical, nonclinical, regulatory, CMC, and commercial
  • Integrate multiple opportunities within a therapeutic area driving strategic decisions across a segment of the portfolio
  • Leverage input from all critical functions to create integrated strategic development plans that define goals, milestones, decision points, critical path, timeline, risks, assumptions, alternative scenarios, and budgets
  • Mobilize and align the organization, including driving decision-making in governance settings, to implement the development strategy within a program and between programs in a therapeutic area
  • Foster strong relationships with team members and functional line managers and serve as key point person for program team members on project-related communication, issue identification, and management
  • Foster a team culture of ownership, continuous evaluation and improvement; ensure recognition of team achievements
  • Effectively communicate with and present or report to senior management on program strategy, operational plans, and progress
  • Contribute expertise to the development and implementation of program management best practices to help further the needs of the business
  • Contribute expertise to the development and implementation of portfolio management best practices to help further the needs of the business

Experience and Background:

  • Degree in life sciences; advanced degree or MBA preferred
  • Eight-plus years of biopharmaceutical industry experience, including at least five years in a program management role; leadership of a PMO and supervision of program management personnel strongly preferred
  • A thorough understanding of the drug development process and working knowledge of the essential activities for all key functional areas
  • In-depth knowledge of principles and practices of Program and Portfolio Management
  • Experience in rare diseases or ophthalmology is preferred
  • Significant experience across drug development stages from development candidate evaluation to late-stage development; phase III experience preferred
  • Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated ability to lead a cross-functional team, and influence at all levels of an organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitation
  • Ability to work independently and with flexibility to handle workflow in a fast-paced environment
  • Some travel will be required, up to 25%
