Senior Director, Medical Affairs, Field Medical

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Medical Affairs, Field Medical is a key member of the global medical affairs team who will work closely with medical affairs, commercial, legal, regulatory, clinical development, and other key stakeholders to develop the field medical strategy and build the necessary medical science liaison teams to prepare and support the launch of approved product(s) and indications. The successful candidate will provide critical insights into the field medical strategy, develop the field model and align across regions, ensure successful training of the team, and continually evaluate the execution of the team in alignment with global medical affairs strategies.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and lead GMA field medical strategy
  • Build infrastructure to enable high performing field medical team
  • Build, lead and oversee the management of US based field medical teams across therapeutic areas
  • Collaborate with EU Medical Affairs to align on overall field medical strategy and approach at Apellis
  • Oversee field medical excellence for US, EU, and rest of world
  • In collaboration with therapeutic area leads, develop national strategy for KOL engagement
  • Ensure high performing field medical team
  • Oversee gathering of insights from the field medical team to further inform GMA strategies
  • Coordinate with cross functional partners including commercial, clinical development, and clinical operations to appropriately deploy MSLs teams to meet key organizational objectives

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Must have a PhD, Pharm D or MD level degree or equivalent


  • 10 years + experience in field medical affairs
  • Experience in rare disease, hematology, nephrology, or ophthalmology preferred
  • Significant experience across various field medical engagement models supporting development and launch programs preferred.

 Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated ability to lead a cross-functional team, and influence at all levels of an organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitation.
  • Ability to work independently and with flexibility to handle work flow in a fast-paced environment.
  • Travel will be required, up to 80%.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
