Senior Director, Investor Relations

Position Summary:

The Senior Director, Investor Relations is a key member of our Finance team and works directly with our CFO as well as other senior executives to develop and implement an investor relations strategy. The position will be responsible for managing external relationships and assuring strong and consistent communication with the investment community including current shareholders, prospective shareholders, and financial analysts covering Apellis.  

As the leader of investor relations, this individual is responsible for developing and executing a strategic investor relations plan to communicate the company’s strategy and progress with the investment community and will work closely and collaboratively cross-functionally across the company.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Drive investor relations efforts at Apellis, including the development and implementation of a strategic plan that helps ensure an accurate understanding of the company strategy and growth, and a fair valuation
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with investors, sell-side research analysts & other key stakeholders
  • Partner with the CEO and CFO to lead and manage the company’s participation on quarterly earnings calls, investment conference calls and in-house meetings, road shows, analyst days, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Develop & manage strategic IR communications, such as preparing presentation decks, developing earnings releases, creating management Q&As, conference call scripts, and business descriptions/other information for securities filings and the annual report
  • Liaise with senior leadership and cross-functional business partners to direct the positioning of the company’s financial reporting messages, including the annual report, quarterly filings, and other shareholder materials
  • Provide internal and external audiences with an accurate and timely view of the company’s performance and perception
  • Monitor investment research on Apellis and industry peers, and communicate competitive intelligence and analysis to senior management
  • Constantly gather intelligence on the marketplace to inform, educate and coach Apellis leaders on the near and long-term dynamics/impacts of the investment and trading marketplaces
  • Conduct analyses and research in support of the earnings call process, including the analysis of competitor operating results and industry trends
  • Lead and manage the Investor Relations portion of the company website
  • Work closely with corporate communications and other cross-functional business partners to maintain consistent external messaging
  • Present and articulate the investor's point of view to the executive team and make recommendations as necessary and appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field


  • 8-10 years of experience in biotech or pharma investor relations, preferably with some experience commercial stage financial guidance

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated success in managing external relationships within the financial community and established relationships with industry analysts, institutional investors and media organizations
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex information for research analysts and investors and work across different levels of management
  • Superior presentation skills with financial writing experience
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving ability and demonstrated sound judgement
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Highly organized, results driven, problem solver

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Some travel will be required (anticipated to be more than 30%).
