Position Summary:

Reporting to the VP, Head of Global Commercial Strategy the Senior Director, Global Commercial Lead - Ophthalmology will be directly responsible for leading the launch and commercialization of APL-2 in Geographic Atrophy (GA), a prevalent disease with a significant unmet need, with no currently approved treatments.

The Global Commercial Lead for the Ophthalmology Program will be responsible for the overall launch strategy, collaboration with Research, Clinical Development and Commercial colleagues to ensure commercial success of the program in the short and long term. This individual will possess a desire for team success in a highly innovative, fast paced company aimed at transforming lives with new medicines.

Leading the first commercial launch for Apellis in Ophthalmology will require strong leadership and exceptional commercial acumen. It will need an experienced yet innovative leader with a mindset anchoring on an exceptional customer experience.  

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Working collaboratively with clinical development and program management as a key member of the Ophthalmology Program Team to define and deliver on therapeutic area strategy
  • Partner with Research, Development & Commercial colleagues to create and communicate the vision and launch strategy to optimize the success of the GA Program worldwide
  • Provide commercial input into the Clinical Development plan and Regulatory strategy to optimize launch success
  • Providing commercial assessment to support life cycle management, new programs, and business development
  • Organizing advisory boards and market research programs as needed to better inform key commercial questions
  • Aligning with market access and other cross functional partners to establish product positioning and the development of value propositions for GA assets across all potential patient types and ensure market awareness and understanding
  • Contributing to messaging and communication planning, including scientific/clinical conference abstracts and manuscript submissions to peer reviewed journals
  • Ensure global launch readiness through preparation and support of regions and countries
  • Ensure integration and geographic alignment of commercial strategies
  • Develop global sales forecasts for GA within the long-range plan, identify key levers in the forecast and create strategies to drive success
  • Review business performance of commercial teams and ensure management actions are taken to secure adherence to agreed plans
  • Build and lead a best in class global brand team to create the Global Commercialization Strategy while cultivating an inclusive high-performance environment that values diversity
  • Select and develop key talent and ensure retention of high-performers, to strengthen the team and the company by creating a winning spirit and by developing excellence-oriented and customer-focused culture, fostering innovation and building best in class team

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Undergraduate degree in business or science or related discipline required. MBA or advanced degree

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in the biopharmaceutical industry which may include new product planning, strategic/global marketing, or commercial strategy
  • Launch experience preferred
  • Prior experience in ophthalmology diseases is a plus
  • Country level marketing experience is ideal
  • Global experience working across regions and countries a plus

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
