Apellis is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutic compounds to treat disease through the inhibition of the complement system, which is an integral component of the immune system, at the level of C3, the central protein in the complement cascade.

We believe that our lead product candidate, APL-2, has the potential to be a first-in-class treatment targeting C3 that may address the limitations of existing treatment options or provide a treatment option where there currently is none. APL-2 has already shown activity that we believe is clinically meaningful in clinical trials for two distinct medical conditions—geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration (GA) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). We plan to conduct additional clinical trials in GA, PNH, autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and complement-dependent nephropathies.

Position: Director, Rare Community Engagement & Marketing

Reports to:  VP – North America Sales & Marketing

Location: Waltham, MA

Position Summary:

Apellis is seeking a dynamic and passionate commercial leader for the role of Director, Rare Community Engagement & Marketing. It is an outstanding opportunity to make a significant impact for patients and the company, establishing the community engagement and marketing function at Apellis in preparation for its first commercial launch.

The Director will be responsible for establishing and implementing a vision for community engagement and marketing for the Rare Business Unit, focusing first on PNH and then pivoting to additional indications. They will rapidly build a plan, team, and set of key deliverables in order to introduce Apellis to the PNH community and begin to establish credibility and trust with the community.

The Director’s team will consist of both field-based community-facing roles as well as office-based marketers. They will be deeply engaged with the leadership of brand marketing, sales, and patient advocacy. They will report to the VP, Head of North America Sales & Marketing.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Create a vision and plan for community engagement and marketing
  • Drive implementation of that vision in PNH in a way that reflects the needs of the community, business priorities, and Apellis’ mission, values, and culture
  • Build and manage a high-performing team whose approach aligns with Apellis’ mission, values, and culture. Support team members in their development
  • Effectively socialize community engagement and marketing strategy, launch plan, and core activities/tactics across all levels of the organization
  • Establish processes that will enable a foundation for field team success, such as goal setting, business planning, performance management, and guidelines on engagement with sales and patient services
  • Advise support teams on key requirements for field team, including training and analytics
  • Ensure that policies, procedures, and infrastructure for compliance, legal, and regulatory are in place to support community engagement and marketing
  • Build strong and positive relationships with brand marketing, sales, and patient advocacy
  • Think holistically about the business and closely monitor performance against key metrics, taking accountability for driving success over the long-term in a highly competitive market
  • Be a voice for the community within the organization
  • Drive efficient and thoughtful stewardship of team budget

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences, MBA preferred

Experience:

  • 8+ years of biotech/pharma experience, predominantly in patient marketing or engagement roles of increasing scope and responsibility
  • Experience in launches, field roles, and/or rare diseases is helpful

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Passion for understanding and addressing the needs of people living with rare diseases, their caregivers, and their community
  • Reputation of being a well-respected, dynamic commercial leader who can inspire people behind a vision and connect authentically with external stakeholders
  • Motivation to be a part of envisioning and building the infrastructure, systems, and tactics for the function to ensure launch success
  • Track record of building plans and driving excellent execution of those plans through collaboration and accountability
  • An entrepreneurial spirit coupled with the drive to embrace innovation and develop creative but well-reasoned solutions to business challenges
  • Demonstrated integrity on the job, including an understanding of relevant rules and regulations
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence across functions and varying levels of management 
  • Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, managing through ambiguity
  • Willing to travel domestically up to 40% of the time and attend events outside of business hours (e.g., occasional weekends and evenings)
