Apellis is seeking to appoint SVP Head of the US Commercial Affiliate, a strong commercial leader with US experience to lead their US Commercial Affiliate. This is an outstanding position and opportunity for an experienced and seasoned Commercial General Manager to make significant impact on the US presence of Apellis while serving as a member of Apellis’ extended global commercial leadership team. The new SVP Head of the US Affiliate will lead the build out of Apellis’ the US affiliate, setting up the complete business structure and setting the commercial strategy and US launch plans in partnership and constant collaboration with the Global Marketing and Commercial team. Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer and based at the global commercial headquarters in Waltham, MA, the SVP Head of the US Commercial Affiliate will serve as a key member of the global commercial leadership team. S/he will lead teams focused on Rare Hematological disease like PNH (Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria) and other indications like GA (Geographic Atrophy) and efforts focused on developing complement immunotherapies for pipeline diseases and new assets, as well as the commercial evaluation of external assets and technologies. This professional and his/her organization is charged with setting the US commercial vision and strategy as well as executing key initiatives that will enable Apellis to optimize the global opportunity for the Company’s products and pipeline assets.

Fundamentally, the SVP Head of the US Commercial Affiliate will bring an ability to operate at a strategic and senior level, applying his/her experience and knowledge of commercialization together with a holistic view of drug discovery and clinical development in order to bring maximum benefit for patients and to demonstrate the value of our products.


This critical leadership role requires proven leadership in a combination of commercial operational roles in the US, as well as strategic marketing across multiple specialty areas, and an exceptional track record in specialty product launches. Fundamentally, s/he must bring scientific credibility and influence, learning agility, a creative and innovative mindset and approach, a sense of urgency, and an ability to be “hands on”.


Job Responsibilities:

The SVP Head of US, in particular, will bring strategic leadership to shape the future of the Apellis business within and beyond PNH and GA within the US.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • A scientific orientation from experience across multiple therapeutic areas within industry
  • Ability to effectively drive complex negotiation processes with large and complex customers, from a commercial value proposition standpoint.
  • Future direction and strategy of Apellis as it enters its next exciting stage of evolution and US growth.
  • Develop strategy for market access, pricing and reimbursement for the US in preparation for product launches.
  • Lead and drive complex customer negotiations
  • Drive and oversee the affiliate structure build-out of the US organization.
  • Create a full US Organization from the ground up and develop and manage a commercial affiliate, including mapping out and building all cross functional support functions and relationships with all cross functional leads ( for example US Market Access, US Marketing, US Supply Chain etc) and US sales field based teams.
  • Support clinical development organization in the management a medical organization, including regional functional leads (Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs) and US medical directors & MSLs.
  • Help establish US HQ support cross functional leadership (e.g Finance, Legal & Compliance, etc.) in conjunction with the corporate teams
  • Define long-term strategic as well as annual operating plans for the US business in alignment with global organizational strategies and vision.
  • Ensure Apellis is operating in strict compliance with all local legislation
  • Key member of Global Commercial Leadership Team helping prepare for commercial launches, deliver commercial success, and develop commercial talent at Apellis
  • Coordinate processes and communications to ensure engagement and alignment across functions
  • Partner with the Global Market Access team on the development of a compelling economic value proposition and global pricing recommendations
  • Maintain industry awareness regarding market trends, competition, product acceptance and new product releases
Education: 
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree; an MBA or advanced science/medical degree is greatly preferred 

Experience and Background:
Significant breadth of US commercial experience, with the ideal candidate having held both operational and strategic roles, as well as positions across multiple functions (e.g. sales, marketing, market access, etc.); e.g., 12+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and/or consulting arena, including some combination of marketing & sales and P&L management, plus market research and/or new product planning

  • A strong background in US General Management responsibility within pharma and/or biotechnology
  • Knowledge of and expertise with US regulatory frameworks and processes
  • Knowledge of US market access and Pricing challenges and processes
  • Knowledge of pharma-specific regional and local compliance codes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the conception, development and execution of marketing strategies for highly specialized products in the US including a track record of successful product launches
  • Outstanding intellectual ability with judgment that reflects reasoned and creative business views.
  • A strong understanding of the US healthcare system, including the legal and regulatory environment, along with demonstrated integrity on the job.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Scientific understanding, learning agility, and the ability to interact with and influence colleagues in Research and Development.
  • Demonstrated experience building value propositions for all stakeholders.
