Working alongside the Academic Systems and Scheduling Department, faculty, and other key stakeholders, the Instructional Designer will be responsible for designing and supporting engaging, accessible, and effective learning experiences, both online and on-ground, while also assisting with the administration of our Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas. This role focuses on instructional design, faculty and staff training support, course development assistance, and ensuring the LMS is optimized for both academic and administrative learning needs. The ideal candidate will have prior experience with Canvas, particularly in course setup and grading functionalities. This is a full-time, remote position supporting both campuses and providing direct impact through innovative instructional solutions. The role requires strong integrity, the ability to work independently, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and enhance online, hybrid, and on-ground course templates that integrate seamlessly into Canvas. This includes ensuring that classroom grading workflows are structured in a way that allows students to track their progress in Canvas at any time.
- Assist faculty with the administrative aspects of Canvas, including course setup, loading templates, and configuring grading structures to align with institutional standards.
- Provide guidance on curriculum development, course structure, and the effective use of instructional technologies to enhance both student engagement and instructor efficiency.
- Support faculty, staff, and students by troubleshooting LMS-related issues and providing direct guidance on Canvas functionalities, particularly grading workflows.
- Assist various departments with the setup, organization, and technical implementation of faculty and staff training courses in the LMS. While content development remains the responsibility of the respective department, this role ensures courses are structured effectively and function properly within the system.
- Work with the Academic Systems and Scheduling Department and other stakeholders to test and implement new tools, integrations, and features within Canvas.
- Develop and maintain documentation, training materials, and best practices related to instructional technology, including specific guides, video tutorials, and ongoing updates to training courses.
- Monitor system usage and generate reports to support data-driven decision-making related to course design, learning effectiveness, and training completion.
- Stay current with trends in instructional design, digital learning, and LMS advancements by participating in professional development activities such as workshops, conferences, and webinars.
- Develop and facilitate training workshops, resources, and one-on-one consultations to support faculty and staff in effectively using Canvas and instructional technology.
- Maintain a high level of integrity and independence in daily work, managing responsibilities proactively when not directly assisting faculty or staff.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology/Systems, Instructional Technology, or related field.
- Experience working in education, training, or online teaching with online learning platforms.
- Experience with Canvas LMS for Higher Education.
- Experience in Instructional Design.
- Experience using a variety of distance education technology (point-to-point, streaming video, etc.)
- Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and resolving technical issues within the LMS.
- Familiarity with user roles, permissions, course maintenance, and troubleshooting in Canvas LMS.
- Understanding of accessibility best practices and copyright laws related to online instruction and posted materials.
- Ability to work and train in PC, Mac, and mobile environments.
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Position Information:
- The regular schedule for this role is Monday – Friday, 9am – 6pm. This is subject to change based on department needs. May be required to work an alternate schedule which would include nights and/or weekend days periodically based on student calendar and department needs.
- The pay range for this position is $68,640 - $70,000 annually.
- This position is subject to a background check upon a conditional offer of employment and a reference check.
- This is a fully Remote Position.
