The Assistant Technical Director (Electrics) will be responsible for assisting with the daily technical operations of the Production Department including, but not limited to, the building and/or drafting of lighting, sound, scenery elements, or general space maintenance, where needed. The Assistant Technical Director will work in a demanding environment and is expected to think creatively and respond rapidly to a constant influx of demands. 
 
In this position, the incumbent will assist the Technical Director and Associate Technical Director in providing leadership and supervision for all activities pertaining to AMDA’s technical production staff. The Assistant Technical Director will be responsible for assisting in developing a highly motivated and collaborative technical production team consisting of electricians, carpenters, student workers, and other skilled theatrical technicians.  

Primary Responsibilities:  
 
  • Assist with operating, maintaining, and safeguarding the technical assets/equipment of the theater.
  • Assist with the planning of necessary production support across multiple disciplines such as sound, scenery construction and installation, and production specific needs with a particular emphasis on lighting needs.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Production, Production Management Team, Technical Direction Team, and Production Design Team on the technical specifications, costs and usages of theatrical equipment required for the fruition of all AMDA productions.
  • In conjunction with the rest of the Technical Direction Team, supervise and assist with, but not limited to:
  • lighting hang, focus, and programming
  • scenery construction and installation
  • the planning, transportation, and building of temporary stage and truss structures.
  • Attend technical rehearsals where needed to supervise and assist in the instruction of student and professional crew.
  • Fill in where needed to cover any light programming shifts for our Capstone and Content Creation events.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and assignment of tasks to student workers and technical production crew.
  • Lead, supervise, motivate, and inspire the technical production team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:   
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior experience in a leadership or management position in the field of theater production preferred.
  • Active management style; enjoys working in person with a team.
  • Knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of live theater, dance, and music productions.
  • Ability to execute production techniques with attention to proper safety practices and protocol.
  • Experience with standard theatrical design & technological practices.
  • Experience with CAD software such as Vectorworks or AutoCAD
  • Excellent interpersonal leadership, organization, and communications skills (both written and oral).
  • Strong work ethic, stamina and passion for the performing arts and working in an educational environment; as well as the flexibility and experience to deal with unpredictable pressures and a fluctuating workflow.

Schedule: 

  • Full time hours (Monday through Friday: 9 am - 6 pm)
  • Hours during the evening and weekends may be required.

The pay rate range for this position is $34/hour - $36/hour.
