Allegheny Science & Technology (AST) is seeking a Junior Chemist to directly support a federal client in Idaho Falls, ID. This position will provide subject matter expertise in the provision of health physics operations, management and training across multiple areas in association with various activities for the Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (RESL).

Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform wet chemical dissolution and separation techniques for the routine analysis of the alpha emitting radionuclides of plutonium, uranium, americium, thorium, and radium in soil, water, vegetation, air filters, and other matrices.
  • Using and calibrating High Resolution Alpha Spectrometry in the verification of radiological standards and the analysis of real-world samples such as in soil, water, vegetation, air filters, synthetic urine and synthetic fecal samples.
  • Planning and conducting method development, evaluating the efficiency and reliability of existing technical procedures, and where appropriate, recommending specific improvements to activities in specialized area(s) of analytical radiochemistry in support of agency wide projects and programs.
  • Assist in the preparation of reference material for the routine operation of the MAPEP, DOELAP, NRC, SSPEP, NIST and DoD programs.
  • Write, review, and edit analytical laboratory procedures. 
  • Performs assigned functions in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, rules, and operating procedures relating to the protection of the environment, to the health and safety of RESL workers and the surrounding population, to the protection of property.  For each assigned activity, the employee will perform and monitor quality control to meet or exceed acceptable quality level for that performance standard.
  • Serves as the authorized representative for instrumentation, the technical content of laboratory procedures, and the identification of improvements to laboratory processes in the area of alpha spectrometry. 
  • Maintains and improves expertise in metrology, analytical, and chemical methods for determination of alpha-emitting radionuclides.
  • Serve as point of contact for NRC and prepare monthly budget and status NRC report.  The incumbent will be trained for this task.
  • Provide other additional support activities at the direction of STM of Chemistry and RESL Director.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or related science field.  First year college chemistry course with associated laboratory experience. First year college chemistry course with associated laboratory experience.
  • Must successfully complete the INL Radiation Worker I course.
