Allegheny Science & Technology (AST) is looking for a Laboratory Technician to support to the Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (RESL) in Idaho Falls, ID. This position will assist in conducting analytical chemistry, radiation calibrations, and measurements in support of Strategic Partnership projects with external customers that include the U.S Airforce, U.S. Nuclear Navy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, and other federal government agencies.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Help prepare reference materials, including soil, water, vegetation, air filters, synthetic urine and feces, or others as required.  This includes all phases of the preparation process, e.g., collecting or ordering the blank background material and chemicals, the accurate measurement of individual constituents and the blending or other techniques used to produce acceptably homogeneous reference material, subdividing into individual samples, packaging, and shipping.
  • Help with the construction of synthetic radiological lung, thyroid and whole-body phantoms that are used in DOELAP and SSPEP programs. 
  • Provides sample preparation support to RESL chemists.  This includes providing accurate dispensing of sub-samples from larger sample containers by either weight or volume. 
  • Help maintain the inventory of sample containers, shipping materials, and chemicals for RESL programs.  This task may include ordering the materials.
  • Assist in the preparation of reference material for the routine operation of the MAPEP, DOELAP, NRC, SSPEP, NIST and DoD programs.
  • Prepare samples for analyses using various chemical methods which include using molten salt fusions and wet chemical digestions.  The incumbent will be trained for this task.
  • Place samples in various instruments for analysis. The incumbent will be trained for this task.
  • Performs assigned functions in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, rules, and operating procedures relating to the protection of the environment, to the health and safety of RESL workers and the surrounding population, to the protection of property.  For each assigned activity, the employee will perform and monitor quality control in order to meet or exceed acceptable quality level for that performance standard.
  • The incumbent will be trained how to perform various radioanalytical and inorganic analyses and will be assigned to a senior analyst that will oversee and assign their day-to-day duties.
  • The incumbent will help maintain overall chemistry laboratory cleanliness and perform cleaning of chemistry glassware to ultra purified specifications.
  • Provide other additional support activities at the direction of STM of Chemistry and RESL Director.
Position Requirements:
  • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma and the willingness to learn analytical chemistry techniques to meet the needs of RESL projects/programs and have general lab experience.
  • Successfully complete the INL Radiation Worker I course, within 3 attempts.
  • Previous experience in pyrosuhlfate fusion, preparation of performance test samples, analysis of data generated by analytical experiments, and the specific areas listed in the position responsibilities above.
