CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA
The Finance department supports the CMPA’s mission and goals by safeguarding the Association’s assets through accurate and timely recording and stewardship of financial transactions. Providing quality legal services and compensating patients harmed due to medico-legal occurrences to uphold our members’ integrity is central to the CMPA’s mission. Working with both internal and external stakeholders, the Medico-Legal Financial Analysis team provides integrated financial insights and strategies that support the unique objectives and operational requirements of the Association. This team is responsible for strategic financial planning, budgeting and analysis of the Associations two largest expenses: legal costs and compensation to patients.
POSITION OVERVIEW
As part of the Medico-Legal Financial Analysis team, the Senior Financial Analyst provides integrated financial insights and strategies that support the unique objectives and operational requirements of the Association. The Senior Financial Analyst bases these strategies and insights on analysis of medico-legal expenditures, environmental trends, and industry dynamics. As a member of a collaborative team, the Senior Financial Analyst also contributes to the financial planning and analysis that supports decision making at the Association. The incumbent will investigate emerging issues and trends to determine the financial drivers of the Association.
Leveraging their deep knowledge of financial analysis, adherence to internal control principles, technical expertise in analytics tools, and understanding of finance IT systems and processes, the Senior Financial Analyst will transform medico-legal data, both financial and non-financial, into insightful, timely information to support decision-making. The incumbent will work in close partnership with various teams both within the Association and externally to ensure delivery of professional and proactive financial analysis, reports, and forecasts, as well as provide guidance and recommendations to management.
POSITION ACTIVITIES
- Works with both internal and external stakeholders to analyze medico-legal financial expenditures, investigate unusual variances, and provide meaning to data to explain trends
- Prepares insightful reports and dashboards on medico-legal expenditures to aid decision-making and help identify performance gaps
- Partners with internal and external stakeholders to develop forward looking budgets, financial plans, and analysis to support the medico-legal expenditures and provides strategic advice for senior management
- Performs accounting activities related to medico-legal expenditures, encompassing financial close processes, internal control framework updates, and ensuring accurate financial reporting
- Explores and draws meaningful conclusions from medico-legal data exploration, including identifying critical metrics and KPIs
- Works with management teams to prioritize business, analytics, and information needs and to understand dashboard requirements
- Proactively identifies and pursues opportunities to enhance financial reporting, data utilization, and analytical capabilities to drive improved insights and decision-making
- Partners with various departments and stakeholders to interpret and understand the medico-legal data to inform financial reporting
- Advises Manager of emerging trends regarding medico-legal expenditures
- Prepares reports and delivers presentations on the findings to senior management, while also continually improving and innovating the business intelligence tools and dashboards
- Monitors and continually improves the Association’s internal control framework regarding medico-legal expenditures
- Delivers adequate and timely action plans to address and resolve any control deficiencies surrounding medico-legal expenditures
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 4-year Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably with a concentration in Business, Finance, or Accounting
- Successful completion of an accounting designation (CPA) is required
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience providing value-added financial analysis and proactive advice to management to improve business performance
- Experience preparing and performing complex data analyses (data cleaning and preparation, analysis and critical thinking, data visualization and communication of key findings)
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel required and experience with Power Query or similar ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) tools for data cleaning, transformation, and automation of workflows is considered an asset
- Demonstrated experience in developing forward-looking financial projections, with an emphasis on predictive model-based forecasting techniques to support strategic decision-making
- Experience and interest for how technology and systems can support analytical capabilities and internal control effectiveness and efficiency
- Knowledge of IBM Cognos Analytics or experience with query function and reporting tools
- Experience in data visualization and reporting tools including the ability to create dashboards, analyze trends and present actionable insights is considered an asset
- Experience working with senior management, staff, and a variety of stakeholders
- Experience with Workday and Adaptive Planning is considered an asset

- Salary range: $102,600 to $137,300 – this role is classified as a level 9
- Location: Hybrid - Primary Remote. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake.
