JOB DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION: NON-EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION (NEMT) DRIVER

CLASSIFICATION CODE: NON-EXEMPT FULL TIME

REPORTS TO: FACILITIES DIRECTOR

 

STATEMENT OF JOB: Apache Behavioral Health Services (ABHS) Non-Emergency Transportation (NEMT) Driver is responsible for safely transporting clients to and from the dialysis center and other approved medical appointments. This position ensures timely, courteous, and reliable transportation while maintaining compliance with agency policies, tribal regulations, and applicable state/federal requirements. This position serves as a dual role with responsibilities of providing transportation and working with facilities technicians to support agency needs.  

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provide safe, timely, and courteous transportation for clients to and from the dialysis center and other scheduled medical facilities. 
  • Assist passengers entering and exiting vehicles, including those with mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.), ensuring safety at all times. 
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; report any maintenance or safety issues to the Fleet Supervisor immediately. 
  • Maintain accurate transportation logs, mileage records, and client sign-in/out sheets as required. 
  • Follow established schedules and routes while remaining flexible for emergencies or schedule changes. 
  • Comply with HIPAA and agency confidentiality policies when handling client information. 
  • Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and stocked with required safety/emergency equipment. 
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety guidelines, and agency driving policies. 
  • Attend required trainings, certifications, and safety meetings. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the transportation program. 
  • Responsible for cleaning, sweeping and buffing floors, cleaning walls, light switches/fixtures, window blinds and doors. Shampooing rugs, washing glass (windows exterior/interior).  
  • Set up arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.  
  • Dispose of garbage properly. Daily empty all garbage receptacles and replace liner. Clean and pick up litter around the building and parking lot. 
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen area, replace paper towels, and refill hand soap. 
  • Move and trim lawn and shrubs, use lawn mowers and hand/power trimmers and clear debris from walkway and grounds. 
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals. 

 

  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks. 
  • Unlock and lock the main entry gate daily and check security fence for damages or maintenance 
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and ABHS property and conduct annual inventory or as requested from supervisor for reporting purposes. 
  • Notify supervisor concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating system. 
  • Develop and maintain schedule to ensure all ABHS vehicles are clean and maintained as needed. 

 

  • Perform basic auto inspection daily regarding tire pressure, oil and fluid level checks, and vehicle damage (interior/exterior). 
  • Demonstrates ability to work productively and harmoniously with supervisors and co-workers. 
  • Effectively utilizes work time to ensure all assignments are completed in thorough, timely manner and follow through on all commitments. 
  • Participation in all required ABHS training.  
  • Reports/attends work in timely manner. Must be reliable and communicate directly with supervisor in all matters of attendance. 
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the supervisor. 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. 
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License (Class D) with a clean driving record; CDL preferred but not required. 
  • At least 1 year of professional driving experience (medical or non-emergency transport preferred). 
  • Knowledge of local and tribal roads and ability to navigate safely. 
  • Ability to lift and assist passengers with mobility aids up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must demonstrate interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively with a wide range of people, teams, managers, supervisors. 
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. 
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills. 
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment testing, including, but not limited to, fingerprint clearance, drug testing and background check

 

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Driving for extended periods in various weather conditions. 
  • Assisting passengers with limited mobility, including use of wheelchair lifts and securement devices. 
  • Exposure to potential medical emergencies during transport (training provided). 

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to sit for long periods while driving. 
  • Frequent bending, lifting, and assisting passengers. 
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely at all times.
